Welcome to our website. Please feel free to look around.

I would like to invite you to contact me or one of my colleagues directly through one of the links or contact numbers on this website. The low threshold entry of Internet, and a comprehensive website such as this one, provides you with easy access to detailed information on PamGene's activities, technologies and products. However, this does not help you get in contact and discuss personal ideas and plans. We strongly feel that innovation and progress can only be achieved by sharing ideas and jointly executing subsequent plans.

The vision of our team couples to the emergence of targeted therapies, specifically kinase-based oncology therapies. These novel targeted therapies are based on intelligently designed drugs (kinase inhibitors) that, in the ideal situation, specifically kill tumour cells with little or no side effects on the patient. Many pharmaceutical and biotech companies have such drugs in development. In our vision we picture a future in which targeted drugs are only administered after pre-testing on patient material, such as blood or tumour biopsies, showing that the patient will actually benefit from this drug. This pre-selection of patients complements the targeted drug approach and is therefore called companion diagnostics. We are a companion diagnostics company and aim to develop tests for this purpose.

I realize that this vision is quite advanced and in some cases will be difficult to reach, certainly compared to current practice. However, our PamGene team and collaborators are currently tackling this problem with the tools we have developed. Very promising cell-line and clinical material studies have been concluded and are in press. Further work on clinical material, as well as work in the context of clinical trials, is underway to generate further supporting evidence.

The additional unique aspect of our Matching Medicines approach is that we measure kinase activity in patient materials before the drug is taken by the patient - this is unmatched by any other technology. We have diagnostic grade instrumentation and biochips for this. You can find further details and technical explanations on our biomarker test methods, as well as some posters from recent meetings, elsewhere on our website.

In summary, our Matching Medicines technology and approach aims to:

  • Help stratify patients for clinical trials
  • Contribute to the often difficult treatment decisions that doctors have to make based on information from limited clinical trials
  • Select the right drug for the right patient in those cases where a choice of kinase inhibitors is available (e.g. in leukaemia such as CML)
  • Help avoid unnecessary treatment of patients with drugs, avoiding side effects and avoiding unnecessary costs to the healthcare system

This is a paradigm shift from the more traditional approaches of personalized medicine.

It is clear that the stakes are high but we are taking the risk because this is a very worthwhile project. The competitive sustainability of our company is guaranteed by the continual discovery and patenting of new, novel classes of biomarkers (kinase inhibitor related). The potential applications are already clear in several cancer types but collaborative research has also shown our method to work in applications other than oncology.

I hope this information transfers some of our enthusiasm to you and that it will encourage you to contact me, or one of my colleagues. We collaborate in many different ways and hope to welcome you soon as a partner in our team!

With best regards,

Tim Kievits
